Letter to Arlington Advocate announcing candidacy:

It is with great excitement that I enter the race for Arlington School Committee this year. I’m excited about the possibilities for our schools in the coming years and I am eager to be part of the group that helps guide their path. I’m running because I know how critical a role our schools play in our individual and collective future and because I think I can have a positive impact on public education in Arlington.

Over the past several months, I’ve participated with administrators, teachers, students and other parents in a working group discussing how we need to educate our children to prepare for the 21st century. I found it very engaging to hear different perspectives on what we are teaching now, and what we should do in the future. The world is changing quickly, and clearly our students will need new skills to be successful. It is important that we find a way to prepare our students for the challenges that lie ahead in our changing global economy.

I continue to be actively engaged in our schools. In addition to being the Ottoson webmaster, I have been attending both the School Committee meetings as well as those for the Schools are a Priority in Our Town (SPOT). Our new superintendent has been working with the School Committee, administration, and faculty to continue to improve our schools, and I support these efforts. I passionately want our schools to be great at all levels.

In addition to my excitement, I also have trepidation about the financial constraints that we face. We want a great school system that instills a passion for learning for all of our students. We want a safe environment for them to learn in. We want teachers who are eager to be here, feel valued, and have the tools they need to engage their students. We have limited dollars to do these things, and so it will be a challenge to achieve all of our goals, but one I look forward to facing.

I am eager to discuss these and other education issues with you during the upcoming campaign. As you study the issues and the candidates, I hope you will support me with one of your votes.
